WEYRLING TRAINING

If you would like to know what Pern date corresponds to the current week of training for your Weyrling class, please review the TEW Training Dates or the IIW Training Dates as applicable.

Weyrling classes are designated by their Weyr and turn of Hatching, followed by a sequential number; the lower the number, the older the class. For example, Class TEW36-2 is the second class of Weyrlings at Thread's End Weyr in Turn 36.

Notes on Training

All activities such as feeding, cleaning, oiling are generally done in company of clutchmates, especially before individual weyrs are assigned in Sevenday 26.
All classes and physical training activities are done with clutchmates and Weyrlingmaster, though individuals are permitted to practice some skills on their own time.
The entire Weyr is drafted to help in the annual herb gathering trips - weyrlings are no exception. In the event that a class of weyrlings is too young to leave the Weyr at the time of a gathering trip, they will be required to participate in the next trip, even if they have graduated from training.
Whenever possible, gold weyrlings are required to spend time in the Hatching Grounds with an adult Queenrider whose dragon has clutched to learn the duties and responsibilities surrounding clutchings and hatching. This time must be fit around other training and weyrling duties.

Please be aware that extra training for gold weyrlings is marked in gold italics.
These training sessions are not for general weyrlings, although they're not top-secret. In other words, your blue weyrling doesn't attend them, but he knows that the gold weyrlings do.

Graduation for Weyrlings in our Club will take place at training Sevenday #52, and permanent wing assignments will be granted from Council at that time.

SEVENDAY	TRAINING

1	Sensations of Impression: Getting used to mental and emotional communication with the dragonet Care of your dragon: feeding, oiling, bathing, etc.

2	Dragonrider Responsibilities: Duty to queens, Weyr, Weyrleader, and own position Memorization of Teaching Songs to reinforce duties (continues throughout training) Meet all Queenriders Queenrider Duties: Duty of procreation, survival of the breed Note: Please remember that items listed in gold italics* are extra training for gold weyrlings - see note at the top of the page.

3	Dragon Healing: Basic health care and dragon first aid Healing: Basic health care and human first aid Gold dragon influence in calming

4	Duties of ground crews in Threadfall Etiquette: Behavior during Gathers, Hatchings, and other official functions Dragonets begin eating whole animals

5	Tying your shoulder knot and starting Weyrling chores Etiquette: Recognizing and addressing superiors, especially within the Weyr Weyr Management: Stores - Perishable (food) and nonperishable (clothing, etc.); supply, vs. need

6	Firestone: Selection, sizing, and bagging Drills: Passing firestone Weyr Management: Firestone - requirements of a Weyr, for a single Fall; supply vs. need

7	Drills: Passing firestone Drills: Marching in groups of three Dragon Healing: Recognizing Symptoms - wing fatigue, mating flight strain, wing dropsy, ailments of the joints, tendons, and ligaments Assist Healers during Threadfall

8	Drills: Marching in groups of six

9	Drills: Marching in groups of twelve Gold dragon influence in command

10	Flight Training: Dragons fly without their riders (continues through sevenday 22) Equipment: Assembly, care, and repair of flame-throwers Weyr Management: Storage, refueling, and supple of agenothree and tanks

11	Etiquette: Interacting with Commoners, Holder, and Craftsmen; formally representing the Weyr Drills: Extra practice on drills up to this point

12	Drills: Marching and tossing firestone in groups of three Begin regular attendance of Queens' Wing meetings

13	Drills: Marching and tossing firestone in groups of six Weyr Structure and Staff: Meeting important people who haven't been encountered yet

14	Drills: Marching and tossing firestone in groups of twelve

15	Hunting: Observation and imitation of adult dragons Etiquette: Representing the Weyr in public and private

16	Diplomacy: Current political atmosphere Meet all riders in UFHW/UFCR

17	Equipment: Care and repair of protective gear (riding leathers, boots, gloves, helmets, goggles) Meet all riders in UFRF/UFRT

18	Equipment: Learn parts and assembly of riding straps (using old, discarded straps), how to adjust sizing Equipment: Care and repair of riding straps - oiling, stretching, recognizing weak spots and making appropriate repairs, identifying unsafe/unsalvageable straps Meet all riders in UFLF/UFLT

19	Flight Theory: Meteorology, air currents and thermals, Threadfall charts Establishing Threadfall charts

20	Flight Theory: Meteorology, air currents and thermals, Threadfall charts Equipment: Making and testing your own riding straps (Note: These activities will continue throughout the remainder of training until the Weyrlingmaster is satisfied.) 24	Flight Training: Dragons fly with riders and extra weight - training for elevator duty Flight Theory: Wing Formations - basic formation types and terms Meet all riders in CFLF

25	Flight Theory: Wing Formation - Positions within formations and how they operate Hunting: Weyrling pairs hunt for themselves, accompanied by adult dragons (Note: Weyrlings will progress in this area at the Weyrlingmaster's discretion.)

26	Flight Training: Flying in groups of three Flight Training: 'Elevator duty' within the Weyr Weyrlings move into their own weyrs Weyr Management: Assigning weyrs and duties Golds have NO Elevator Duty *Note: Elevator duty continues until the next weyrling class is old enough to take over, or until the class is assigned to temporary wings (week 47), whichever comes first.

27	Flight Training: Flying in groups of six Pernography: Leaning names and geographic locations of major Holds and Lord/Lady Holders Flight Theory: Wing Formation - review special Queens' Wing formations

28	Flight Training: Flying in groups of twelve (Note: Weyrling groups will progress in this area at the Weyrlingmaster's discretion.) Pernography: Learning names and geographic locations of major Crafthalls and Craftmasters Meet all riders in LFTW/LFCW

29	Pernography: Names and locations of all Weyrs and Weyrleaders/Weyrwomen; territory covered by each Weyr, including overlaps and 'dead zones' Flight Theory: Sending and receiving visualizations - focus on recognition points on Southern Continent, provided by the Weyrlingmaster Meet all riders in LFRH/LFRC

30	Flight Theory: Sending an receiving visualizations - focus on recognition points on Northern Continent, provided by Weyrlingmaster (Note: This activity continues through the duration of training until the Weyrlingmaster is satisfied.) Drills: Tossing firestone sacks while maintaining aerial formations in groups of three Meet all riders in LFLH/LFLC

34	Flight Training: Weyrling pairs fly straight to known points and go between back to the Weyr on their own (Note: Weyrling groups will progress in this area at the Weyrlingmaster's discretion.) Drills: Continued mix of all drills learned to this point (continues throughout training)

35	Flight Training: Going between in groups of three Flaming: Flying and flaming in groups of three Join Queens' Wing for flame-thrower drills (Note: This continues until graduation and beyond.) Record Keeping: Weyr Life - mating flights, clutch numbers, hatchling numbers and color ratios

36	Flight Training: Going between in groups of six Flaming: Flying and flaming in groups of six Flight Training: Weyrlings go between to known locations and return on their own Record Keeping: Dragonriders - names of new pairs; notation of pairs who have left/died

37	Flight Training: Going between in groups of twelve Flaming: Flying and flaming in groups of twelve Record Keeping: Non-Riders - rank/positions, marriages, births, deaths

38	Flight Training: Weyrlings receive visualizations from Weyrlingmaster, go between to an unfamiliar location, retrieve a specified item, and return to the Weyr on their own Begin regular Transport Duty Gold weyrlings do NOT have Transport Duty *Note: Transport duty continues until the next weyrling class is old enough to take over, or until the class is assigned to temporary wings (week 47), whichever comes first.

42	Visit Holds and Halls under Weyr's protection; meet Lord/Lady Holders and Craftmasters Threadfall: Weyrlings' Wing following Lower Flight/Golds follow Queens' Wing (all flaming when necessary) Threadfall: Ferrying firestone/ferrying flame-throwers *Note: From this point forward, gold weyrlings will join the Queens' Wing as the other weyrlings move from flight to flight.

43	Threadfall: Weyrlings join Queens' Wing Threadfall: Ferrying firestone/ferrying flame-throwers Note: The weyrlings will be divided roughly in half. Half will fight Thread with the designated wing or flight while the second half ferries firestone and flamethrowers. At the changeover, the groups will switch places and continue. Visit Holds and Halls under Weyr's protection; meet Lord/Lady Holders and Craftmasters*

44	Threadfall: Weyrlings join Lower Flight Threadfall: Ferrying firestone/ferrying flame-throwers

45	Threadfall: Weyrlings join Centre Flight Threadfall: Ferrying firestone/ferrying flame-throwers Testing and Observation by the Weyrleader and Weyrwoman for all

46	Threadfall: Weyrlings join Upper Flight Threadfall: Ferrying firestone/ferrying flame-throwers Testing and Observation by the Weyrleader and Weyrwoman for all

47-51	Temporary Wings assigned Observe and assist Weyrleader, accompany Weyrwoman and Queenriders in official duties, assist Headman/woman in Weyr management *Note: Elevator/Transport duty ends in week 47, if another class hasn't already taken over.
