Pride of the Hold

M7 and 8, Turn 39

Towards the end of Month 7, Bral - senior journeyman herder at SDH - begins to get reports of herdbeasts being attacked by wild felines. Because the herds are closer in to the hold during winter, extra men and canines are assigned to guard the herds. Lord Holder Iveran puts up the flag and, when a sweeprider from Tail Wing lands, requests the Weyr's sweepriders to keep an eye out for any signs of felines close in to the hold. At first, the riders spot a few older kills, nothing to pinpoint the felines' current location; eventually one does catch a glimpse of two, or possibly three, wild felines.

In the first two sevendays of month 8, the killings continue, one every few days, and a canine is mauled badly enough to need to be put down as well. Sweepriders in the sector (CFLF, in month 8) continue to spot older kills, but no live felines.

Then, on D19, month 8, a Hold herder and canine are killed by one of the felines.

Lord Holder Iveran puts a bounty on the felines; anyone who brings in a freshly-killed feline from the Hold's surroundings will be given three marks, whether they're one of the Weyr's riders or the Hold's residents.
