BROWN RIDER D'TOLLEN

Persona : D'tollen
Writing Status : NPC/Free
Gender : Male
Age : 16
Rank/Craft : Brown Rider, Apprentice Woodcraftsman
Residence : Ierne Island Weyr

Physical Description : D’tollen’s physical build has changed greatly during his few turns at Ierne Island. He is no longer the stocky, stunted boy he used to be, but a tall young man of no less than 5’10”. Whilst he is not of a broad muscular build, he boasts a lean and nimble figure not lacking in strength. His skin is well tanned, his hair a dark shade of brown, kept short to keep it under control, and his eyes are deep amber in colour.

Personality : Despite having undergone a great physical change at the Weyr since he impressed Varth, his attitude to life remains remarkably similar (although with the noted addition of a little extra maturity that becomes a Dragonrider). However, he is still a mischievous Weyrling who takes a great passion in humour of all forms. His mind is quick and he is always alert and attentive to the situation in hand (even if only to find a method of introducing some humour into it). Although he is intelligent, he is often prone to being blunt and tactless with others. Emotionally he is a strong person, but within him he still carries the scars of the death of his family and his best friend S’tal, for whom he has never truly grieved and the memory of whom he pushes into the deepest recesses of his heart.

Life Story : D'tollen was born at Sonette's Dawn Hold 16 turns ago as Dartollen. His father, Filmaralt used to manage their small cothold, Moonshine Cot Hold, in the Sonnette's Dawn region. His mother, Ollenin, looked after the children. He grew up here with his two brothers, Nefal and Dollim and two sisters, Alenma, and Shenna. Dartollen lived here happily until his fifth turn, when his mother died in childbirth, the baby with her. Filmaralt was heartbroken and never truly recovered. By this time, his brother, Dollim was 20 turns old and he took over much of the management of the hold from his grieving father.

When Dartollen was 11 turns old, his father and Dollim went out to hunt with his two sisters, who were looking for wild herbs. They never returned, nor did the search party that went to look for them discover any traces of them. Dartollen was just about to join the Woodcraft Hall at this point at apprentice level and so he left as soon as his father died. His uncle and aunt moved to the cothold to look after it. His older brother, Nefal stayed behind at Moonshine Cot Hold.

And so began his time at the Woodcraft Hall. Barely a week after he arrived, his brother was searched by Thread’s End Weyr. A month later, Nefal impressed a blue dragon called Fyanith. Dartollen spent only a few turns at the Woodcraft Hall before he was expelled for a practical joke he played.

One night, Dartollen managed to acquire some fellis juice and slipped it into the bowl of stew of an apprentice with whom he had argued all the previous day. The apprentice did not fall asleep at the table but managed to get back to the apprentice’s lodge. During the night, Dartollen painted a stupid face on the sleeping apprentice. The apprentice overslept until an angry journeyman woke him. Dartollen unfortunately had spilt a bit of paint on his hands, which in his excitement, he had forgotten to wash. When the journeyman asked to see the apprentice’s hands to look for paint, Dartollen remembered that he had forgotten to wash them. The journeyman took one look at his hands and sent him to the Master Woodcraftsman. Seeing no point in denying the prank since he was already caught, Dartollen confessed, and the Master Woodcraftsman told him that he had quite simply had enough of Dartollen and that he was to leave the hall as soon as possible.

Dartollen had no wish to return to Moonshine Cot Hold, as it held many sad memories, and so he got in touch with his brother who had recently been transferred to Ierne Island Weyr. Dartollen then went to live at the Weyr with his older brother, N’fal.

Dartollen quickly made friends with a young lad of the same age at the Weyr called Satalin. Barely two months after he arrived at the Weyr, his brother was transferred back to Thread’s End Weyr after an incident within his wing. Having no desire to move again, Dartollen was fostered with his friend Satalin, and his foster parents.

A few months after he moved into the Weyr, Dartollen’s friend Satalin was Searched whilst the two of them were walking down the river that flows through Ierne Island Weyr. Satalin went back to the Weyr whilst Dartollen carried on walking and became upset and jealous of his friend. Some how, Dartollen ended up outside the infirmary where he met a Sarjhanka and her green dragon, Veveeth. Veveeth Searched Dartollen immediately, and Dartollen returned to tell his foster parents about him being Searched.

Satalin and Dartollen, now both Searched, moved into the candidate barracks. After some amusing incidents there, the boys settled in nicely. One day, Dartollen and Satalin took some skiffs out for a race in the sea south of Ierne Island Weyr. Whilst out at sea, the boys heard the humming of the dragons and realised that the hatching was happening. For fear of missing his chance at being a dragonrider, Dartollen raced back to the beach and ran to the Hatching sands. He arrived just as the last eggs were hatching and somehow managed to impress a little brown dragon, Varth.

Since then he has lived the normal life of any Weyrling -– training, drills, socialising and causing general mischief. The loss of his best friend S’tal in the first drills between left him devastated and suddenly very lonely within the group of Weyrlings. For a long while he became quite an insular person but gradually his social side returned and he made other good friends within the group.

Dragon's Name : Varth
Dragon's Colour : Brown
Dragon's Age : 2
Sire and Dam : Bronze Reth and Gold Blyth (IIW35-1)
Age of Rider at Impression : 14

Dragon's Description : Varth is a medium to large sized brown dragon whose hide is deep chocolate in colour, fading to a lighter brown on his underside. Like all well cared for dragons his skin is soft, smooth and bright. Since Varth has never flown thread properly he is completely without scar or injury.

Dragon's Personality : Varth has a very similar personality to D’tollen in that he likes to join in any argument which is taking place. Varth makes relatively witty comments for a dragon, which D’tollen finds very humorous. Like his rider, Varth is very strong willed but always wins any arguments he has with D’tollen.

Varth is a very boisterous dragon and is always keen to be the centre of attention and joins in with any games the other dragons are playing. Whilst he is very energetic a lot of the time, he does like to sleep in the sunshine for long periods of time too. When D’tollen gets angry, Varth is very effective at calming him and thus avoiding further trouble.
