WEYRLINGMASTER L'KEY

Persona : L'key
Writing Status : NPC/Free
Age : 44
Gender : Male
Rank/Craft : Bronzerider, Weyrlingmaster
Residence : Ierne Island Weyr

Physical Description : L'key is lanky with a straight-backed, upright-posture that matches his no-nonsense personality. His gait and movements are sharp, tense and somewhat jerky as if he's always in a hurry to get somewhere. His brown hair is kept very short and his eyes, set in a long, sharply angled face, are a deep klah color and are often focused attentively on the speaker, giving him an intense, somewhat intimidating gaze. His mouth can be expressive when he's engaged in a conversation - especially if said conversation strikes his interest - but its normal position borders on permanent disapproval. Because of this, he's often thought of as unapproachable, which he isn't; he just doesn't suffer fools gladly. He's always exceedingly polite, following the rules of Weyr etiquette almost obsessively.

As with other riders his age, L'key is not unmarked by Thread. He has numerous scars on his arms, thighs, back and face. The top of his right foot has a circular scar two fingers wide and three long from where a strand ate through his boot while ferrying sacks of firestone to the wings in his youth.

Personality : From a rebellious youth to a no-nonsense rider, L'key is practical, logical and never shirks his responsibility. His sweep reports are always detailed but concise. His weyr is tastefully and comfortably furnished and never in disarray for he believes that everything must always be in it's place. When he eats, he always arranges his food in a precise arrangement on his plate and then eats from each in exactly the same order, meal after meal never mixing flavors or textures as some people do.
Armeth is always well taken care for; his hide and harness well oiled, his couch swept clean of hide dust on a daily basis. L'key's clothing is always made out of the best materials and are always clean and neat.

He's not afraid to make a decision, thinking quickly and acting even quicker. Rarely, if ever, will he admit that he's wrong, easily diverting the blame to someone else, even if that person is higher up in the chain of command if he thinks he can do so successfully.

He's not one for small talk, preferring concrete evidence and facts but is well known for offering his opinion and defending it loudly if necessary. His temper, although the Turns have taught him self control, still flares up on occasion, especially if someone accuses him of being incompetent, lazy or, Faranth forbid, disorganized. Even Armeth has learned to stay clear of his rider on such occasions.

Life Story : Lenkey, born the first Turn of the current Pass, was the result of too much wine drunk at a Fall Gather. His mother, Larmika, was clearly more interested in studying toward her mastery at the Healer Hall rather than raising a child. His earliest childhood memories consist of the smell of boiling numbweed and the ever present smell of redwort. Of his father, on those rare occasions when his mother acquiescent to talk about him at all, he knows very little. Only that he was a visiting dragonrider, tall, broad shouldered, dark-haired and arrogant who, after spending the total of one day and one night with his mother, was never seen again. Her expression and tone was always laced with bitterness and from this, Lenkey came to dislike all dragon riders for the pain that one had caused his mother.

When Lenkey was 13, his mother was assigned to the new Weyr, Thread's End, in the Southern Continent Too young to protest, Lenkey was forced to accompany her.

Those first few Turns at Thread's End Weyr were hard on both of them, but especially on Larmika. She was now faced with healing those that she had always felt caused her the greatest harm. Slowly, her outlook changed, mainly due to a patient brownrider but Lenkey stubbornly refused to change his opinion. His goal in life was to leave the Weyr as soon as he was old enough, and he was willing to do anything that would take him far, far away from anything to do with dragons and their riders.

Then, in the spring of his 15th Turn, he was Searched. Lenkey reacted badly, becoming rude, belligerent and insulting toward the rider and his dragon. The old blue dragon became so upset that the gold guarding her clutch had to come to his rescue. In order to pacify the high-strung queen from upsetting the entire Weyr, the Weyrwoman was forced to order the boy, whom she personally figured had absolutely no chance in Impressing, to stand for the next Hatching. After that, she told him, he was free to leave the Weyr.

So it was a very sulky, unwilling Lenkey that attended the candidates' sessions in the sevendays to follow. Arms folded, eyes narrowed rebelliously, lips turned up in a disgusted sneer, quite willing, and able, to cause trouble at every turn, he became the Weyrlingmaster's ongoing nightmare.
It was to the surprise of everyone, except that of the rider of the blue dragon who watched smugly from the newly completed stands surrounding the Hatching Grounds, that L'key Impressed bronze Armeth in the 15th Turn of the current Pass.

In Turn 35, L'key moved to the newly created Ierne Island Weyr.

Dragon's Name : Armeth
Dragon's Colour : Bronze
Dragon's Age : 22
Sire/Dam : Bronze Tenroth and Gold Mirdith
Rider's Age at Impression : 15

Physical Dragon : Armeth is slightly bigger than average, a bit disproportionate in the wings but well within the normal range for a bronze. He has a man-sized Thread score on his front right shoulder and numerous other, more shallow, ones across the rest of his body. Several of his neck ridges are deformed from Thread.

Dragon's Personality: While Armeth was quite excitable as a fledgling, once he achieved his full growth and could focus his energy on destroying Thread, he calmed down quite a bit. He's now considered one of the most dependable dragons in his wing, a bit lumbering in the air but adaptable enough to fill in for another position at a moment's notice. Like most dragons, he loves to sleep in Rukbat's hot southern rays and enjoys the attention he gets from his rider when being bathed or oiled.
He's participated in, and won, many green mating flights and has even caught a few junior golds, mostly by accident rather than by design. He seems to have a knack for being in the right place at the right time.

Pet Name : Tempest
Pet Species : Firelizard
Pet Color : Brown

Pet Description : Tempest hatched while the hurricane was pummeling Thread's End Weyr in Turn 36, hence his name. Unlike his namesake, the brown's personality is easy going. He's fairly self-sufficient (for a firelizard), he enjoys helping L'key with Armeth's washing as he knows that when the big brown gets oiled so will he. He can often be found curled up between Armeth's neck ridges, or twining necks with Grace, L'key's green firelizard.

Pet Name : Grace
Pet Species : Firelizard
Pet Color : Green

Pet Description : L'key inadvertently Impressed Grace in Turn 32 when he had thought a firelizard the perfect birthing day gift for his mother. Grace had other plans and hatched nearly a sevenday earlier than he had been told she would. She's small, very delicate and proportioned perfectly and is always trying to to boss L'key, Armeth and Tempest into doing what she wants them to do. L'key sometimes calls her 'queen Grace' for her imperious mannerisms.
