BROWNRIDER M'KAI

Persona : M'kai
Writing Status : PC/Active
Age : 36
Gender : Male
Rank/Craft : Brownrider
Residence : Thread's End Weyr

Physical Description : M'kai is slightly taller than average, and is well built from turns of dragonriding experience. His pale complexion betrays the fact that he is a reasonably new addition to the Southern Continent. He has dark hair that is starting to pepper with gray, and it crowns his head haphazardly. never really settling into a true style. His eyes are a light blue, and once gleamed with amusement, but now are lost in shadows. Dark circles are under these eyes from many sleepless nights as he adjusts to the absense of his weyrmate. He was considered ruggedly handsome in his youth, and he still has some of his appeal, although the scowl that frequently appears on his face is far too severe.

Ever since the accident, he is never seen without his shirt. Were he to be seen without it, it would be apparent that what once was a strong, well muscled back is now a mass of twisting scars. His voice is a deep, steady baritone, so full of inflection that it's quite easy to read M'kai.

Personality : In his youth and early adulthood, M'kai was a outgoing, talkative man who always seeked to put a smile on the face of everyone he met. He was always one to turn things into jokes - and was known as somewhat of a trickster. Ever since the loss of Aidia, he has been much more quiet and reserved, but has done his best not to isolate himself completely from others. Theaccident has caused him to question his abilities as both a potential leader and a dragonrider, so he has become quite self critical.

He has a somewhat unstable personality - some days he has an incredible patience and other days he flies off the handle at the smallest criticism. He is quite intelligent and spends his free time looking over old threadfall reports and playing dragon chess and poker. He has a good advantage in poker as he has a very good memory and is exceptionally good at reading people.

M'kai is generally seen around other people, but has been avoiding the ladies - especially the greenriders as of recent. Donovath recognizes that this is bad for his rider and attempts to intervene to force socialization - much to M'kai's general chagrin.

Life Story : Madikai was born the eldest son of Madilia, a Harper and Kaias, a tanner. For the first 5 turns of his life, he tried to spend as much time with his mother as possible - following her while she taught the fosterlings of Fort Hold, clinging to her skirts as she washed his father's clothes. After this - he suffered two great shocks - he was assigned to another Harper for his own studies, and the growing rotundness that he'd observed in his mother turned into a baby sister who suddenly was competition for his mother's affections! Kalia's birth turned Madikai from a shy child who hid whenever strangers were near to a bold, outgoing, ornery little git.

Madikai then grew into a typical boy - helping his father tan hides, digging up insects scaring his sister with them, and hunting tunnelsnakes when he thought no one was looking. The carelessness of his early youth was interupted by the birth of his little brother Kaid, born far too early and quite sickly. His brother would only survive a few sevendays before passing away. His mother was inconsolable for some time as she was quite excited by the prospects of a larger family. Madikai tried to be a jokester and make his grieving mother laugh, but it would take another turn passing and a forth pregnancy to brighten her spirits. Shortly after his 10th birthingday, Kadil was born, bringing his mother to some semblance of her previous self.

Madikai was very interested in being a Harper, and was hoping to be apprenticed within the next few turns, but unfortunately possessed none of his mothers skills, unlike Kalia, who had already developed a soprano voice that was the envy of many - Madikai included. Madikai would also try his hand at tanning, but despite turns of assisting his father with the craft, he was only passably good at it. He would find himself at 12 turns with insufficient skill to apprentice at either craft, and instead helped out the Headwoman in the Great Hall. He would stay here until his 15th turn, when he was unexpectedly Searched by a rider from Fort Weyr. He seized the opportunity - finally a way to distinguish himself from his irritating little sister!

He threw himself into his Candidate studies at the Weyr - eagerly devouring lessons about Impression and Feeding by day, and flirting with the Weyr's females by night. More than once was he found sneaking out of his quarters late at night, and as a result he always seemed to managed to get the most tedious of chores. The eggs grew harder on the sands and Madikai's expectations grew higher, but something wasn't right. He was being called out a lot more in Candidate lessons, and a few sevendays before the Hatching, he was told that he would not be allowed to stand. Madiki realized that he needed to rein in his behavior if he was to Impress.

The next hatching he would be allowed to stand, and brown Donovath would take him as his lifemate. Weyrling life passed all too quickly for M'kai, and relatively without incident. Before long, he had joined a fighting wing and found himself busied in the life of an adult dragonrider. Donovath started participating in mating flights, and M'kai soon found himself with an unfamiliar greenrider named Aidia who would produce for him his first child. His daughter Kaia would be fostered, but due to his Holdbred mentality, M'kai did his best to visit her at least once a sevenday.

M'kai's mother would pass when he was 20 turns old, and he still regrets that his busy life at the Weyr prevented him from visiting her while she was ill. He found himself once more turning to Aidia, as Donovath had flown her green Vath several times and they had become friends. Both being Holdbred, they craved a somewhat more formal relationship, and Aidia would become his weyrmate at 21 turns. Together they would have two more children Alikai being born shortly after his 22nd birthingday and Aidik shortly before his 29th. He would also bear a son named Xandric with another greenrider.

The turns passed, M'kai and Aidia were happy together for near 15 turns, and M'kai was up for a promotion to Wingsecond at Fort Weyr when disaster struck. It was a chilly, windy day and thread was falling in erratic clumps. M'kai watched in horror as a large clump of Thread headed straight toward Aidia, who was swerving to avoid another dragon's breath. M'kai urged Donovath into a dive, trying desperately to save Aidia, but the attempt was in vain. As Vath went between forever, M'kai and Donovath were struck, leaving both with severe burns to their backs.

The pair would spent weeks in the Infirmary, then another few months confined to bed rest as their burns healed. Then came the long process of getting flight ready again. M'kai spent his time grounded debating a move south, as Fort Weyr was painfully cold and full of memories. As a result, M'kai has just transfered to Thread's End Weyr, bringing Kaia and Aidik with him.

Dragon's Name : Donovath
Dragon's Colour : Brown
Dragon's Age : 20
Sire/Dam : Transfer
Rider's Age at Impression : 16

Physical Dragon : Donovath is rather small for a brown, but as a result is quite quick and agile. In his youth he was quite prone to performing many aerial acrobatics, but as he ages he has become slightly more cautious in the air. His hide is a deep, almost reddish looking brown. He bers some smaller pock marks from thread scores, but the only scores that are particularly prominent are the ones upon his back. He bears a permanent impression of his rider between the twisting scars that mar his back - and fortuantely did not damage too much wing sail.

Dragon's Personality:Calm, stable, and collected, Donovath is M'kai's rock. When M'kai's personality gets a bit too erratic, or he rages over messing up yet another set of riding straps, Donovath is always there to keep him steady. He is confident in his abilities, and always pushes both himself and his rider to try harder, fly faster, etc. After the accident, when M'kai resigned himself to a life in a lower, "safer" wing, Donovath constantly argued that the two of them would return to their full fighting strength. Donovath's biggest weakness is overconfidence, something that has led to numerous wing sprains, near misses, and attempts to woo gold dragons.
