BROWNRIDER N'TRIEN

Persona : N'trien
Writing Status : NPC/Free
Age : 21
Gender : Male
Rank/Craft : Brownrider
Residence : Thread's End Weyr

Physical Description : N'trien is of average height with a thin build muscled from years of hard labor. His hands are callused and his biceps bear frightening tan lines. His face is small and round with wavy brown hair that curls onto his forehead and around his ears. He has hazel eyes, long eyelashes, and skin toasted decidedly brown. His hands and arms are corded with lean, well-defined muscle from his experience with clay and pottery. Maintaining a reserved and quiet exterior, he is only rarely openly emotional.

Personality : All about smarter, not harder, N'trien's not opposed to putting his hands to work but he's the sort to stop and think about all the possibilities just in case he can avoid it. Life in the Weyr has broadened his horizons and made him open to new things. He's generous with his time but would like something in return; his selfish streak has lessened with the awareness of his responsibilities as a brownrider. His greatest fear is disappointing his wingseconds or wingleader and he often second-guesses himself. Outwardly wary, he reserves his exuberance for private conversations with Olaronth.

Life Story : Nariniett was born the oldest boy to a farming family at Thread's End Hold. Lacking both physical prowess and a temperament suited to physical labor, he lacked any sort of motivation to further himself in either a craft or the fields with his father. He stayed close to the Hold and picked up spare marks at odd jobs, learning basic Hold maintenance, serving on ground-crews, and generally not making anything of himself.

His mother and father, in an attempt to make him realize he was wasting his potential, sent him to stay with a cousin at North Tip Fishing Hold for his sixteenth summer. He liked the work on the fishing boat and got along well with the other boys his age. Upon his return he entertained the fantasy of building his own boat. To that end, he spent his evenings bothering resident Hold craftspeople. He got on well with one of the resident woodsmiths and learned to saw, hammer, and carve.

But years of practice had made laziness and procrastination a habit he couldn't break. The boat was soon forgotten and it looked as if Nariniett would settle in as an average Hold worker for the rest of his days. He'd had few girlfriends and marriage did not appeal. Shortly after his eighteenth birthday, he found a niche in mediating conflicts between the younger boys by overseeing fistfights.

Chopping wood when the Search came, Nariniett presented himself on a whim and felt genuine surprise to be chosen. He found the simple physical chores of candidacy easy in comparison to the constant presence of concerned, interested adults. He made few friends, none of them from Thread's End Hold. Chosen by brown Olaronth at the hatching, N'trien felt stunned to discover someone in the world who unabashedly thought him capable of great things. With his dragon for a constant source of inspiration to do better, N'trien applied himself to weyrling training and navigating his new position. Both dragon and rider, though sometimes a little slow, were steady and obedient students.

Tapped for Upper Flight, Head Wing, N'trien made an enemy of fellow weyrling Ac'cu that he expected to last many Turns, but mostly the ire has cooled as the Turn passes. Adapting to the concept of freedom-with-responsibility, N'trien volunteers for many tasks that take him flying out of the Weyr. One of these brought him to Sonnette's Dawn Hold, where he struck up a friendship with a Journeywoman, Tirmia, and discovered a talent for amateur pottery.

His first Turn in Head Wing went well until when, in the first month of Turn 39, N'trien severely strained his rotator cuff during a disastrous Threadfall. His prognosis grim, he plunged into a depression when he was grounded from flying and thus prevented from visiting Tirmia, reassigned to a beach weyr, and transferred to the Queen's Wing. To his surprise, the man who came to his rescue was his former nemesis, Ac'cu. Having come to terms with his own role in the Weyr flying for Lower Flight, Ac'cu helped out when he could.

Slowly, with the help of a handful of other young two-Turn old riders, N'trien began to take the steps necessary to recovery, beginning to physically exercise again in month five and looking forward to returning to the active wings. Freed from the inhibitions that N'trien's depression had placed upon him, Olaronth expressed his jubilance by chasing and catching, in a matter of two sevendays, Ch'can's Carth and M'keiros' Beklaith, with the greenrider Mali (Kranseth) as his stand-in.

He was returned to flight status and began to drill, with no firestone, with queen's wing -- but behavioral problems showed that he was having trouble coping. It was decided by that he needed some time with responsibilities outside of the Weyr while he fully recuperated. He replaced D'neel as watchrider at SWH in Month 6, Turn 39.

Dragon's Name : Olaronth
Dragon's Colour : Brown
Dragon's Age : 2
Sire/Dam : Bronze Falairyth and Gold Wyth
Rider's Age at Impression : 19

Physical Dragon : Olaronth's chubby brown self, the color of uncracked walnut shells, is pale compared to most of his brothers. He is of average wingspan and length but with extra padding on his sides and haunches. He walks with a bounce in his step and flies as if trying to look in all directions at once, an alert sponge soaking up everything in sight. Comparisons during weyrlinghood to a young, enthusiastic canine, while not appreciated, were not completely without merit.

Dragon's Personality:Olaronth is an eternal optimist, cheerful to a fault and easily persuaded to pursue whatever idea's on N'trien's mind with boundless, though necessarily short-lived, enthusiasm. Everything is new and awesome. He pays a great deal of attention to N'trien's emotional state, ever aware of any small shift and quick to point out anything he observes. Olaronth is straight-forward and vocal with N'trien about the world as he sees it; he is quite vocal with the other dragons and can be counted on to be a gossip.

Pet Name: Creep
Pet Species: Firelizard
Pet Color: Blue

Pet Description: Creep seems to have no enthusiasm for anything. He eats when it's time to eat, sleeps a lot, and prefers clinging to someone's jacket rather than using his own wings. His name comes from his uncanny ability to go unnoticed for hours until he scares the daylights out of N'trien with a squawk or a sudden fluttering of his wings. His smooth, even coloring is an elegant royal blue.
