WEYRLINGMASTER S'GIAN

Persona : S'gian
Writing Status : NPC/Free
Age : 61
Gender : Male
Rank/Craft : Brownrider, Weyrlingmaster
Residence : Thread's End Weyr

Physical Description : S'gian is not a tall man, nor one who seems particularly strong at first glance, but he can toss firestone with the best of them, and doesn't hesitate to show the weyrlings how it's done. He keeps his hair, now pure white, cut very short, and no one really knows what color it ever was. His bright blue eyes miss nothing, and when they snap anger, weyrlings want to run for cover.

Personality : S'gian spent two decades fighting threadfall, and he knows that being a dragonrider isn't all glory; he never forgets the first few threadfalls of the pass, when so many dragonriders died, and the memory sometimes seems to make him a bit more grim than some Weyrlingmasters might be. He is sparse with praise, but that once earned, it has a lasting effect. Although sometimes he can be a bit set in his ways, outside of his duties he is pleasant enough, and while in the north never seemed to lack for companions--or bed mates, as the need arose.

Life Story : S'gian was born the son of a metalsmith and a lower cavern worker at Benden Weyr. He grew up knowing hard work and what it brought, and never had a thought of anything more than continuing his father's craft. At the age of 16 he was searched, however, and to his surprise he impressed brown Galeroth--first egg to hatch in the clutch at Benden Weyr. He accepted weyrling training with the hard work ethics he had learned working the smithy, and was proud to become a full fledged rider when graduation finally came. Within a few turns thread began to fall, however, and the nightmare of those first few falls affected him deeply. The arrival of the Oldtimers seemed a miracle, and he learned all he could from them.

In the 15th turn of the pass, Galeroth was injured in threadfall--a shoulder muscle was badly torn, and S'gian was barred from flying thread for some time until he healed. To help pass the time, he began helping the Weyrlingmaster teach the weyrlings, hoping never to see riders take the sky as unprepared as they had been the first turn of the pass. Time passed, but Galeroth's wing never healed enough to withstand again the stress of fighting thread, and S'gian agreed to become a full time Weyrlingmaster. For a few turns he served at Benden Weyr; then he was transferred to Fort, where he remained until early in turn 38. During those turns he was proud of his record--weyrlings trained under his eye had a superb record not only of surviving threadfall, but in being superior thread fighters.

At Turnover (T37-38) he transferred to Thread's End Weyr to fill a need for another Weyrlingmaster.

Dragon's Name : Galeroth
Dragon's Colour : Brown
Dragon's Age : 45
Sire/Dam : Transfer (Benden Weyr)
Rider's Age at Impression : 16

Physical Dragon : Galeroth is medium sized for a brown, with a dark brown hide except for a few mottled patches under his wings.

Dragon's Personality: Galeroth very is patient and sometimes smoothes his rider's lack of tolerance of foolishness when working with weyrlings; he is a good mentor for the young dragons. Although he loves to hear gossip--which he reports to his rider--he usually isn't one for spreading it.
